New Terrifying Radiohead!
It's been five years, or uh, a little more than a third of my life, if you want to look at it that way, since Radiohead released their last album. (Unless you count Com Lag... but I think they only pressed 100 of those. In Japan.)
I heard last year that they were recording a new album, and it was going to be released sometime 'in the near future' (secret record label code for NEVER). I thought maybe it was going to be a Chinese Democracy kind of drawn out let down. Radiohead's 5-record contract with Columbia was finished, and they all have wives and kids and all that hoary adult stuff. I cried. Just a little. Inside.
Fotunately though, they've been keeping up a blog, god bless them, that's cleared up all my questions with insights like:
"today, myself, i was struggling, feels like we been trapped for a long time.in la la land. very frustrating. and under pressure now its so slow.enough to drive anyone loopy. im supposed to be positive>>smiling faces for the outside. well im fucking tearing my hair out.too much at once.furiously writing, working out parts. cracking up.not much time left. unshure about everything.im not supposed to put any of this here. so thats why i am."
Super.
But then I read a bit of an interview they've just done with NME. BEHOLD!
Thom Yorke on the new album:
"It's about that anonymous fear thing, sitting in traffic, thinking, 'I'm sure I'm supposed to be doing something else'. Interestingly enough it's similar to 'OK Computer' in a way. It's much more terrifying. But 'OK Computer' was terrifying too -some of the lyrics were."
Then he says: "Listening back on things we are doing and looking through the lyrics and stuff it feels like we are finally getting somewhere."
I think my feelings about this are best expressed through the following picture:
